ノルウェー通信#3 「スターツロード・レムクル号」 Norwegian newsletter#3 ”StatsraadLehmkuhl”
ノルウェー通信#2では、ノルウェーという国が海洋国家であることをお伝えしましたが、ノルウェー通信#3ではノルウェーがとりわけ船乗りの国であるということをご紹介していきます。写真のスターツロード・レムクル号は、ノルウェーのベルゲンに拠点を置く艇長98メートル、3本マストのスターツロード・レムクル財団が所有する大型帆船です。1914年ドイツの商船として建造、第一次世界大戦でイギリスにわたり、1921年ノルウェーのクリストファーレムクル内閣大臣によって購入されました。（船名は「レムクル内閣大臣」という意味です）
In Norway newsletter # 2, we introduced that the country of Norway is a maritime nation, but in Norway newsletter # 3, we will introduce that Norway is a seafaring nation in particular. The StatsraadLehmkuhl in the photo is a large sailing vessel owned by the foundation of StatsraadLehmkuhl, which is based in Bergen, Norway and she has a length of 98 meters and three masts. She was built in 1914 as a German merchant ship, and gone to England in World War I, and was purchased by the Norwegian Prime Minister Kristoffer Lehmkuhl in 1921. (The name of the ship means “Minister of the Cabinet of Lehmkuhl”)
スターツロード・レムクル号は、2021年8月ノルウェーを出帆し、55,000海里を航行、世界36の港を訪れて、2023年4月ノルウェーのベルゲンに帰港する予定です。これは、持続可能な開発のための国連海洋科学の10年（2021-2030）のノルウェーの取り組みであり、「ワンオーシャンエクスぺディション」として世界に広く発信されています。グローバルな視点で持続可能な開発のために、海洋の重要な役割について世界と共有し、広めていくことを目的としています。船上では、海洋研究と海洋教育が行われていますので、そちらを一部ご紹介しましょう。
The StatsraadLehmkuhl will depart Norway in August 2021, sail 55,000 nautical miles, visit 36 ports around the world and return to Bergen, Norway in April 2023. This is the Norwegian initiative of the United Nations Decade of Marine Science (2021-2030) for Sustainable Development, and is widely disseminated to the world as “One Ocean Expedition”. The purpose is to share and disseminate the important role of the ocean with the world for sustainable development from a global perspective. Marine research and marine education are conducted on board, so let me introduce some of them.

海洋は、気候変動、生物多様性の喪失、乱獲、汚染、酸性化など、さまざまな課題に直面しています。同時に、海洋は食料や再生可能エネルギーの生産増加、CO2の地下貯蔵、その他の生態系サービスの鍵となります。科学者や学生が世界の海洋の状況に関するデータを探求し収集するユニークな機会を提供し、海洋と大気と海洋の酸性化との間のCO2交換、世界の海洋の生物多様性、海洋への人的影響の量と分布などの特定の主要な研究を、マイクロプラスチック、衛星観測検証のためのデータ収集を加えてターゲットにしています。
The oceans face several challenges connected to e.g. climate change, loss of biodiversity, overfishing, pollution and acidification. At the same time the ocean is key for increased production of food and renewable energy, subsurface storage of CO2, and other ecosystem services.
The One Ocean Expedition provides a unique opportunity for scientists and students to explore and collect data on the status of the worlds ocean, and target specific key research questions such as CO2 exchange between the ocean and atmosphere and ocean acidification, the biodiversity of the world’s oceans, the amount and distribution of human impact on the oceans (pollution, noise, microplastics), in addition to data for verification of satellite observations.
船上には研究者、学生、コンテンツプロデューサー、そして献身的な船員の両方がいます。彼らは日々の研究と結果、日常生活を彼らの反省も含めて共有しています。航海を通して、学校部門のパートナーは、学生が密接に旅に従い、新しい知識を得て、海洋のための持続可能な開発へのコミットメントを高めることができるように実践しています。
On board the ship are both researchers, students, content producers and committed fellow sailors. They share both research routines and results, daily life and their reflections with us.Throughout the voyage, partners from the school sector facilitate this information so that students can follow the journey closely, gain new knowledge, and increase their commitment to sustainable development for the ocean.
スターツロード・レムクル号は、2022年9月横浜に寄港の予定です。水平線にスターツロード・レムクル号のマストの先端が現れてくるのを楽しみにしていましょう。さて、もし皆さんが「海洋環境の保全、海洋科学の重要性」を伝えるとしたら、どのような手段を考えられますか？
「大臣に国際会議でスピーチをしてもらう」
「マスメディアなどでその主張をストレートに発信する」
などがあげられるのではないでしょうか。ノルウェーはその時、
「帆船で世界を一周しながら伝えてくる」
という選択をしました。その発想はまさに船乗りの国家ならではと思います。
The StatsraadLehmkuhl is scheduled to call at Yokohama in September 2022. Look forward to seeing the tip of the StatsraadLehmkuhl mast on the horizon. Now, what kind of means can you think of if you want to convey “conservation of the marine environment and the importance of marine science”?
“Minister gives a speech at an international conference”
“Send the claim straight through the mass media”
And so on. Norway then
“We will tell you while going around the world with a sailing ship.” They made the choice.
I think that idea is unique to a seafaring nation.

ノルウェーは、長い伝統と歴史のある船乗りの国家です。私たちの知識と資源を使って海を守るための持続可能な解決策を導くことができると考えています。海が我々を必要としている以上に我々は海を必要としています。海が健全である状態を保たなければなりません。

Norway is a seafaring nation with a long tradition and history. Our knowledge and resources can help to create sustainable solutions We need the ocean more than the ocean needs us,but the ocean must be kept healthy.
